Have a Sound Response

READ: 1 Peter 4:6-11

1 Peter 4:6-11 (KJV)
6  For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
7  But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
8  And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
9  Use hospitality one to another without grudging.
10  As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
11  If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

KEY THOUGHT:

The best response to suffering is the gospel. When you are challenged by others about your faith, respond with the Truth of the gospel. You should always be aware that everyone needs the gospel and that the gospel can change anyone’s life. The apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 4:15 that one of the signs of Christian maturity is speaking the truth in love to help grow more like Christ. Paul lived this way by following Christ’s example. Even as Christ suffered persecution, accusation and opposition, He never stopped proclaiming the gospel of grace and love. Some of Jesus’ last words to His accusers as He hung on the cross were, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.” Following this example, your response to those who are a “challenge” to you should be charitable words of hospitality and grace – words that demonstrate the love of Christ through His gospel that brings everlasting life.

CONSIDER:

  1. Why is it difficult to respond to challenging people with love?
  2. How important is it for you to know how to communicate the gospel to everyone? What can you do to help become more comfortable sharing the gospel with others?
  3. Have you called upon Jesus to save you? If so, how did Jesus respond to you when you called upon Him, even though you are a sinner? If not, what’s holding you back from accepting Jesus as Savior?

APPLICATION:

Be ready to respond with love about the hope found in Jesus Christ!
