Beware of Ignorance

Beware of Ignorance

READ: 2 Peter 3:5-7

2 Peter 3:5-7 (KJV)
5  For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6  Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7  But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

KEY THOUGHT:

One of the most prevalent enemies of truth is ignorance. What makes ignorance so abundant is that it’s so easy to be ignorant. Ignorance is defined as “a lack of knowledge or information.” Essentially, ignorance is an enemy of truth because it is a lack of truth. Even Christians can be ignorant of the truth because they don’t read the Word of God, they don’t study it and they don’t remember it. Ignorant Christians never gain an understanding of God’s Word and are easily swayed to believe something different or to twist the truth unintentionally. In fact, God’s Word tells us that ignorance makes us foolish and causes us to act in ways unbecoming of a Christian (Psalms 73:22). We all must beware of ignorance. The best way to do that is to stay diligent in the pursuit of the truth.

CONSIDER:

  1. Why is it easier to be ignorant than to have knowledge of the truth?
  2. How does ignorance lead to bad behaviors?
  3. What can you do to ensure that you are not ignorant of the truth?

APPLICATION:

Keep away from ignorance by knowing and trusting God’s Word.
