The Old and New: Love is the Reversal

READ: 1 John 2:7-11

1 John 2:7-11 (KJV)
7  Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8  Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9  He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10  He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11  But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

KEY THOUGHT:

Jesus gave a commandment to his disciples that applies to you today: “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another” (John 13:34). The apostle John recalls that commandment in his letter. He informs you that the commandment may seem new, but it’s a commandment that has been around since the beginning. Jesus wants your walk to demonstrate love – not only love for Him, but love also for others, especially for others in the church.

Jesus followed up His commandment to His disciples this way: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). Love is the reversal that makes you a Christian. It is the reversal that makes you recognizable as a follower of Jesus. It is the reversal from hateful attitudes of the flesh to loving actions of the Savior. Are you a loving representative of Jesus?

CONSIDER:

  1. Why is it important for you to love like Jesus?
  2. How does demonstrating love show others that you are a Christian?
  3. What are some ways that can love others, even when they are difficult to love?
  4. How did God show His love toward you when you were not so lovable?

APPLICATION:

Make love the testimony of your relationship with Jesus.
