Child-like Obedience

Child-like Obedience

READ: 1 John 3:4-10

1 John 3:4-10 (KJV)
4  Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5  And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6  Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7  Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8  He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10  In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

KEY THOUGHT:

One of the first things a child learns is that obedience pleases their parents. That lesson applies to a child of God as well. Just as your disobedience displeases your earthly parents, your disobedience to God’s Word displeases God, your Heavenly Father. What motivates you to obey and please God is the same thing that motivates you to obey your earthly parents – love. Your love for God, in reciprocation to His love for you, drives you to obedience and away from disobedience.

It’s important to know that to God, disobedience is transgression (breaking God’s rules) and sin. It’s also important to remember that God loves you even when you sin and displease Him. In fact, He loved you so much in the beginning that, even while you were a sinner, He sent His Son to die for you so that you could be cleansed of sin by believing in Him (Romans 5:8). God has given you His Spirit to help you obey and not sin. Sometimes, you might still disobey and sin. (We all do. That’s because we live in a world of temptation and weakness.) However, God will forgive you if you confess your sin to Him and express sorrow. He also will strengthen you so that you can resist temptation and not sin. God wants you to obey. He will teach you to obey through His Word and by the guidance of His Holy Spirit. But, you have to want to obey because you love Him. Let your love motivate you to obey your Heavenly Father.

CONSIDER:

  1. Why does obedience please God?
  2. Read John 14:15 and John 14:21. According to what Jesus says in that passage, how is love related to obedience?
  3. How can you get strength to resist temptation and obey God?

APPLICATION:

Be an obedient child of God!
