Love in Action

READ: 1 John 3:17-18

1 John 3:17-18 (KJV)
17  But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18  My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

KEY THOUGHT:

One of the great indications that you love someone is that you give to them. Giving is an act of compassion and generosity that places your focus on the one you love and not on yourself. When you choose to give, even when it may not be easy to give, you provide a demonstration of God’s love to others.

It’s one thing to say that you love, but it’s an altogether different thing to show that you love. As the Scripture tells you in James 1:22, you should be “doers of the word, and not hearers only.” When you say something and don’t do it, you deceive yourself, but show your real self to others. You can’t hide real love. In the same way, you can’t disguise fake love. Let your words and actions align together. Love like God loved you – show your love to others through actions.

CONSIDER:

  1. What does it mean to show your love to others?
  2. What are some ways that you can demonstrate God’s love to others?
  3. Has someone ever told you that they loved you, but you knew from their actions that they were not telling you the truth? How did that make you feel?
  4. Why is genuine love so important to your Christian testimony?

 APPLICATION:

Show the world you love them by telling them about Jesus!
