The Call to Love One Another (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12)

The Call to Love One Another (1 Thessalonians 4:9-12)

READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 (KJV)
9  But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.
10  And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more;
11  And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
12  That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.

KEY THOUGHT:

Love is an important characteristic of your personal Christianity. In fact, Jesus said that the world will know that you are one of His followers because of your love for one another (John 13:35). He also commanded that Christians love one another (John 15:17). As a result the call to love one another is not an option. Rather, we should be compelled to love and to grow in love “more and more,” just as Paul describes in this passage.

Recognizing the need to live in a way that demonstrates God’s love to one another, and to grow in love more and more, how is that done? In today’s Scripture, Paul provides a few ways that love is evidenced in your life: by showing your love, by sharing your love, and by growing your love by leading a quiet life, not being a “busy-body” concerning the activity of others, but being busy about your own work, and being honest with others.

Loving one another is part of your calling as a Christian. That makes your love a way of showing the world that you are a genuine Christian. Let your love show and grow by sharing it with others!

CONSIDER:

  1. Why is love such an important characteristic of you as a Christian?
  2. How does God show and share His love with you?
  3. What are some ways that you can show, share and grow your love in the church?

APPLICATION:

Please God by increasing in your love toward one another.
