Stay True to Instruction (1 Timothy 5:1-7)

READ: 1 Timothy 5:1-7

1 Timothy 5:1-7 (KJV)
1  Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
2  The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.
3  Honour widows that are widows indeed.
4  But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.
5  Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.
6  But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.
7  And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.

KEY THOUGHT:

To stay true to instruction means first that you are trainable and second that you practice what you learn. If you’ve been a Christian for any length of time, you’ve been exposed to instruction from God’s Word. Sometimes the instruction seems not to apply to you – at least not directly. But, it’s important to be sensitive to every teaching in the Bible because God placed it there for a purpose. For example, today’s devotional reading might not seem applicable to you unless you are a widow or a person who ministers to widows. However, there are some key instructions that apply to all of us. Here are a couple: 1) We must respect our elders and 2) We have a responsibility to do our part in taking care of our elders.

Notice, that the apostle Paul wrote concerning the responsibility of children and nephews of widows. That covers a wide range of age groups and relations, and likely includes you and me. As a result, if we are true to the instruction given, we will respect our elders and do our part to help them. To stay true to instruction, read every Bible passage asking this question, “What is God instructing me to do with what I’m reading?”

CONSIDER:

  1. Why is it important to seek out and follow the instructions provided in the Bible?
  2. Is ignorance of Biblical instruction disobedience? Why or why not?
  3. Considering today’s devotional reading, what can you do differently to be true to the instruction of the Bible passage?

APPLICATION:

Be true to the calling God has for you by following His Word!
