Stay True to Wholesomeness (1 Timothy 6:3-5)

Stay True to Wholesomeness (1 Timothy 6:3-5)

READ: 1 Timothy 6:3-5

1 Timothy 6:3-5 (KJV)
3  If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4  He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,
5  Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

KEY THOUGHT:

Staying true to wholesomeness means that you exercise self control in every manner of your life. Wholesomeness can be defined as being sound in body, mind, or morals. This can be applied to many aspects of your life, including how you dress, how you think and how you act. Another important part of a wholesome lifestyle is your speech. The words you use and the manner in which you use them can represent wholesome behavior or something much worse.

Note some of the outcomes of unwholesome speech mentioned by Paul:

1) proud speech;

2) questioning and strife;

3) envy;

4) dispute;

5) untruthfulness; and

6) and a focus on personal gain rather than on godliness.

Paul instructs Timothy to “withdraw” himself from those that speak in such a way. Likewise, you should stay away from and stay out of those types of conversations and practice wholesome communications with others.

CONSIDER:

  1. What should you do when you hear or read something that is not wholesome?
  2. How does wholesome speech help establish sound morals?
  3. Would you say that your communication with your close friends is wholesome? Why or why not?

APPLICATION:

Be a wholesome example of Christ to others.
