The Gates of Thanksgiving (Psalm 100)

The Gates of Thanksgiving (Psalm 100)

READ: Psalm 100:1-5

Psalm 100:1-5 (KJV)
1  Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
2  Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.
3  Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
4  Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
5  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

KEY THOUGHT:

Where does Thanksgiving start? Looking at Psalm 100, you could say that it starts at the gates of worship as described in verse 4. If that’s the case, are those gates the doors to the church? In the day when this Psalm was written, the gates that the psalmist references are the gates that opened into the courtyard of the temple where God’s people worshiped. At that time, temple worship was a necessity because the presence of God was in the temple. Today, we have the Holy Spirit residing with us. Our bodies are considered a temple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). The Holy Spirit abides in the heart of those who belong to God. As a result, we could say that Thanksgiving starts at the gates of our heart – the place where authentic worship is born for the Christian. With that in mind, and referring back to Psalm 100, we see that our thanksgiving should entail…

  • A heart filled with thankfulness;
  • An attitude of giving;
  • Praise to God;
  • Thanks to God for who He is;
  • Reverence for God’s name; and
  • Recognition for God’s goodness and mercy.

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, what will you do to demonstrate the type of thankfulness described in Psalm 100?

CONSIDER:

  1. What are some ways that you can demonstrate Thanksgiving throughout the year?
  2. What are signs that a person has a thankful heart?
  3. When you express thanks to God, what are some of the things you are specifically thankful for?

APPLICATION:

Allow your heart to be the gateway of thanksgiving and praise to God!
