READ: Luke 2:8-14
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
KEY THOUGHT:
From a Christian perspective, Christmas celebrates the manifestation (visible appearance) of God to mankind as the Savior Jesus Christ. In practical form, Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ on the earth. Christmas can also be a celebration of the manifestation of Christ as a personal Savior through faith in Him. That saving faith involves more than Christ’s birth, it involves acknowledging Him as the Son of God and accepting His gift of salvation by way of His death, burial and resurrection.
The physical manifestation of Christ is the primary basis of Christmas. But there is more than just Jesus’ birth to celebrate; there is His life, His death, His resurrection, and His church, as well as the salvation that comes from His perfect sacrifice on the cross as described in
, which I believe summarizes the manifestation of God through Christ, as demonstrated by:- The miracle of Christmas – the power of God realized through the gospel of Christ as preached to all nations
- The mystery of Christmas – the revelation of God in visible form as the Son
- The meaning of Christmas – the fulfillment of prophesy – God’s provision of salvation through Jesus Christ made manifest by personal faith in His provision
It’s important to remember at Christmas not only the truth concerning Christ’s birth, but also the salvation that comes by way of His death. Each Christmas, I think back to the rebirth I experienced when I received Christ as my personal Savior. I consider the fact that He was born to die for me, to take my place so that He could pay a debt that I could not pay, to redeem my condemned soul, to free me from the oppression of sin and to adopt me into the family of God – to save me.
CONSIDER:
- How does Christmas manifest Jesus Christ to you?
- Why is it important to reflect on all that Jesus is, not just His birth, at Christmas?
- What can you do to help show others Christ this Christmas?
APPLICATION:
Allow the presence of Christ be your greatest gift this Christmas!
