The Majesty of Christmas (Micah 5:1-4 and Philippians 2:9-11)

READ: Micah 5:1-4 and Philippians 2:9-11

Micah 5:1-4 (KJV)
1  Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.
2  But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
3  Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
4  And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV)
9  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

KEY THOUGHT:

Without a doubt, our Christmas celebrations are filled with majesty and glory. The traditional ornaments and lights bring high attention to the celebration. In order to keep Christ first in Christmas, we must be careful to be certain that the adornment bestowed on this occasion brings glory to the Supreme Majesty of God and not to ourselves or our own selfish devices and motives.

The majesty of God is spoken of a number of times in Scripture. Specifically related to the birth of Christ, we find His majesty mentioned in today’s devotional readings. These passages call to mind the majesty and glory of the coming Messiah Jesus Christ and the realized Savior. From these passages, we can learn the following:

  1. His majesty is revealed at His birth (Micah 5:2)
  2. His majesty is renown through the ages (Micah 5:2)
  3. His majesty and glory reigns over Israel and the earth (Micah 5:2)
  4. His majesty and glory is rendered in a miraculous way (Micah 5:3)
  5. His majesty is representative His Father (Micah 5:4)
  6. His majesty results in peace and good will for those who abide in Him (Micah 5:4)
  7. His majesty and glory shows His royalty throughout the earth (Micah 5:4)
  8. His majesty and glory is revered through His name. (Philippians 2:9-11)

When we understand the prophecy and recognize the revealed fulfillment of that prophecy in Jesus Christ, we will make the majesty of Christmas all about Him. After all, His name is first at Christmas and is above every name for eternity. Christ is the reason for the season; so, this Christmas, recognize the majesty and glory of the Savior by keeping Christmas first all about Him!

CONSIDER:

  1. What are some of the things that commonly get magnified and adorned at Christmas?
  2. How is the majesty of Jesus Christ conveyed during Christmas, especially considering that the holiday bears His name?
