A Call to Be a Shepherd Example

A Call to Be a Shepherd Example

READ: 1 Peter 5:1-4

1 Peter 5:1-4 (KJV)
1  The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2  Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3  Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
4  And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

KEY THOUGHT:

Leadership comes with a great deal of authority and power. With it also is great responsibility. You’ve probably seen people put into positions of leadership that let their authority “go to their head” by exercising “lordship” over those they were entrusted to lead. Peter explains that this is not the type of leadership that’s becoming of the church. Rather, he calls leaders to be examples to those they lead so that they will be willing followers. As you grow as a Christian, you will likely have some leadership responsibilities. Think of how you might lead, following the call that Peter describes by shepherding those you lead, by feeding them, by applying gentle oversight, and setting the right kind of example. If you lead others in this way, you will not only attract others to follow; you will also please God, the chief Shepherd.

CONSIDER:

  1. How does a shepherd get his sheep to follow him?
  2. Why is it important to set an example to others who may follow you?
  3. How can you prepare yourself for future leadership opportunities?

APPLICATION:

Be ready to lead others by example, not by force.
