READ: 1 Peter 5:8-9
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
KEY THOUGHT:
Most of us know that walking through the woods at night brings with it a real potential for danger, such as snakes, tripping hazards, thorny bushes, and other things you would like to avoid. That’s why you use a light to illuminate the path and to help identify any potential snares or hazards. Imagine what walking through a jungle in the dark would be like! This world is like dark woods or even a jungle, with not-so-obvious and hidden dangers lurking all around you. Peter calls upon Christians to be alert and diligent in their watch for dangers. Your adversary in this world is the devil, Satan. He plots and schemes for your failure. He looks for the right opportunity – when you least expect it – to attack. Satan’s appetite is for your destruction. But, as a watchful Christian, you can see through his disguises and avoid his traps, resisting his temptations by faith in Jesus Christ.
CONSIDER:
- How does the devil disguise his traps using today’s culture?
- Why is knowing the Word of God and the promises it contains an important part of being vigilant and watching for danger?
- What can help you most to resist the devil and stand firm for what is right?
APPLICATION:
Stay alert and on the lookout!
