READ: Ephesians 6:1-4
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
KEY THOUGHT:
The Bible is specific about your duty to submit and obey authority, including the authority given to mothers and fathers. Yet, authority is often challenged by those who choose not to be obedient. It’s quite likely that parental authority is challenged more than any other authority. In fact, many Christian teens daily challenge their parents’ authority through disobedience. Disobedience is a form of rebellion. When you choose not to obey, you are essentially choosing to rebel against your parents rather than to fulfill your duty as a son or daughter in obedience. Rebellious behavior doesn’t honor your parents… but dutiful obedience does.
CONSIDER:
- Why is obedience “right” and disobedience “wrong?”
- What are some of the consequences of disobedience?
- How does being obedient honor your mother or father?
- What is the duty of a parents and authorities when it comes to dealing with disobedient children?
APPLICATION:
Receive God’s promise by being obedient and honoring your parents.
