A Hazardous Deception (Titus 1:10-14)

A Hazardous Deception (Titus 1:10-14)

READ: Titus 1:10-14

Titus 1:10-14 (KJV)
10  For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
11  Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
12  One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.
13  This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
14  Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

KEY THOUGHT:

One of the reasons God prescribes standards for Christian leaders is to help defend against the hazards of worldly influence that infiltrates the church through deception. Modern culture and post-modern thought that’s part of this post-Christian world can easily sway the church away from sound doctrine if godly standards are disregarded.

The apostle Paul lists the hazards of those who practice such deception: unruliness, vanity, false teaching, and outright lies, by those who (for the love of profit) twist and turn from the truth to further their own goals at the expense of the gospel. As the apostle Paul writes, when such hazardous deception is encountered, it must be dealt with sharply. By knowing and believing in God’s standards, you will be able to recognize and stand against hazardous deceivers.

CONSIDER:

  1. How is the Bible be the final authority for truth?
  2. How can you use the Bible to help you recognize false teaching?
  3. What can you do to help strengthen the truth and stand against false teachers?

APPLICATION:

Be on the lookout for hazardous deceivers that distort the truth!
