READ: Titus 2:1-3
1 But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
KEY THOUGHT:
The future of the church rests with a new generation of believers – a generation of believers that will learn from the example of those already serving. The apostle Paul refers to those examples as “aged” men and women. The term “aged” doesn’t only refer to physical maturity; it also carries the meaning of maturity in Christ. If you are a mature, experienced or “aged” servant of Christ, then you have a responsibility to be an example of Christ to others by helping them grow through discipleship. We must be careful not to ignore or take lightly the responsibility each of us has to be an example to future generations.
To be a helpful example, you must know what you believe and practice it. The apostle Paul lists some ways that you can help others by example, including:
- Speaking and teaching the truth (sound doctrine);
- Exhibiting godly traits;
- Behaving in a way that honors Christ through holy living; and
- Teaching good lessons that promotes faithfulness and godly behavior to those you have influence over.
When you are a helpful example to others, you will be doing your part to promote and preserve the truth for following generations.
CONSIDER:
- Who is in your circle of influence? How does your example positively influence those within your circle?
- Who is an example to you? How have they influenced you to grow in Christ?
- How can you be a better example of Christ to others?
APPLICATION:
Serve Christ by being a helpful example of Him to others!
