A Hidden Deception (Titus 1:15-16)

A Hidden Deception (Titus 1:15-16)

READ: Titus 1:15-16

Titus 1:15-16 (KJV)
15  Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
16  They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

KEY THOUGHT:

Purity is a key component of the truth. Purity is crystal clear. It reveals the truth and hides nothing. Without purity, there is no absolute truth. What remains is nothing more than a watered-down defiled imitation of truth that hinders those under its influence from knowing and practicing God’s will. When the truth is defiled or contaminated by false teaching, it not only loses its effectiveness; it becomes something else altogether – a deception that hides the impure motives of the ravenous wolves that hide behind it (Matthew 7:15-17).

False teachers are not concerned with God’s will or with the effectiveness of the gospel. Their concern is for their own will and for the effectiveness of their self-built ministry methods. False teachers are careful to hide themselves under a cloak of deception, claiming to have a relationship with God, even though their actions and motives deny God’s presence. This deception extends beyond false teachers to those who follow them, resulting in unwary followers claiming to have trusted in the truth of the gospel for salvation, yet having no evidence of the life-changing power of Christ on their lives.

It’s important for you to realize that there is a way you can be sure that you are in God’s will and saved by Jesus Christ. You can know the real truth and trust in it. The truth is found in the purity of God’s Word. That’s why it’s so important to live in the Word of God, to apply it to your life, and to measure what you see and hear by what’s in it. Recall the words of Jesus in John 8:31-32, “…If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

CONSIDER:

  1. What makes the Word of God a source of pure truth for you?
  2. What should you do if you hear teaching that is contrary to the Word of God?
  3. Is it possible for a person to say that they are saved by Jesus Christ, but not have a relationship with Jesus? Why or why not?

APPLICATION:

Know and believe the pure truth of God’s Word and be free from the traps of false teachers!
