READ: Titus 3:1-2
1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,
2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.
KEY THOUGHT:
One of the key things a Christian must learn as they follow Christ is to humbly obey. The apostle Paul mentions that in Titus 3 as he encourages Titus to remind those under him to be obedient to those in authority over them. That’s not so easy because obedience is not natural. Consider this: a child doesn’t learn disobedience but must be taught to obey as they grow up. Similarly, as a child of God grows up in Christ, he must learn to obey.
Obedience is not a condition of salvation. It is an outcome of discipleship motivated by love and humility. In
, we find that God views disobedience the same as witchcraft. We also find that he values obedience more than sacrificial deeds. Knowing that God puts a high value on obedience, we should make it our objective to learn to obey.Obedience to human authority starts by first learning to obey God. When we put the same value on obedience that God does, we will be more consistent in our obedience to Him and to others that He has allowed to lead in earthly positions, including those principalities, powers and magistrates mentioned by Paul in Titus 3.
Obedience is a powerful testimony for Christ. It shows up in the performance of good works and Christ-like behavior toward others. When you learn to obey, you let the love of Christ compel you to serve and honor others for Him. Make learning to obey a daily lesson!
