READ: 2 Peter 1:5-8
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
KEY THOUGHT:
The secret to a great cake is the cake. It’s great on its own. But with a great cake, there’s things you can do to make it even better – maybe it’s frosting, decorations, or flavored fillings. All of those things add to the cake. Nevertheless, it starts with a great cake. That’s somewhat the case with faith. Faith is great on its own. But there are specific additives that benefit your faith and give it flavor that pleases God. Peter lists several things that you should be striving to add to your faith: virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, kindness and love. Each of these things is nice on its own, but when they are added to your faith, they provide evidence of God’s work in you, enabling you to have a winning recipe for great success as a Christian.
CONSIDER:
- It’s important to know that faith enough to save you and give you eternal life. Still, Peter tells you that you should add to your faith. Why do you think this is so?
- Think about each of the things Peter lists as additions to your faith. How many of those things are lacking from your faith?
- What are some things you can do to ensure that you have a complete recipe for Christian success?
APPLICATION:
Grow in faith by adding virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, kindness and love to it.
