A Studious Worker (2 Timothy 2:14-18)

READ: 2 Timothy 2:14-18

2 Timothy 2:14-18 (KJV)
14  Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.
15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16  But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
17  And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
18  Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.

KEY THOUGHT:

It’s likely that you’ve been embarrassed at least once because you could not answer a question that you were asked about a subject you should know. It happens to most of us, whether it’s a question about school, work, or life in general. The key to being able to answer and avoid embarrassment is preparation. Preparation includes studying, practicing, and avoiding distractions. The apostle Paul instructs Christians to study – to know the truth of God’s Word – so that they can understand and offer the right answers when asked. Studying and practicing the Word of God includes understanding how Scripture applies within its context and how it can be applied in your life. The misunderstanding of Scripture in the early church led to serious error, especially concerning salvation and the coming of Christ. This led not only to an embarrassing situation for some, but also to harm to others who heard the error. Study and practice the truth of God’s Word so that you can show yourself a trustworthy worker for Christ.

CONSIDER:

  1. What are some effective ways for you to study the Bible?
  2. How does studying the Bible help you have confidence even when others may have doubt?
  3. What are some ways that you can be a better prepared worker for Christ?

APPLICATION:

Be a trustworthy worker for Jesus Christ by studying and practicing the Word of God!
