Is what you believe right? Do you know that what you choose to believe matters? You have the free will to choose what you believe. As a result, you can choose to believe what is wrong or you can choose to believe what is right. Whichever way you choose, whether wrong or right, each choice has its own kind of life-changing consequences. Choosing wrong will eventually have bad, harmful and damaging consequences. Choosing right will have good and positive consequences.
Today, you are challenged to believe all sorts of things that can directly impact how you grow up, how you live, how you work, how you play, and how you end up dying. Here are examples of just a few of the things that influence what you believe:
- Parents
- Teachers
- Friends
- Leaders
- News media
- Social media
- Entertainment media – Television, Music, Movies, Video games
Looking at that list, can you identify who is trustworthy and right? Which of those give you confidence in the truth? Your choice is whether to believe the truth or a lie. With that in mind, consider what’s missing from that list – God and the Bible… Today’s culture tends to look everywhere but to God and the Bible as a source to believe. But, as a Christian, those should be the first sources of influence for your beliefs because those are the foundations of what’s right and what’s true. This is important because to believe wrong is to believe a lie and that leads to rebellion or at best, confusion. It’s important to know what you believe and know that it’s right.
Consider this story I heard a while back that shows how what you believe shapes you…
Jonathan Whitfield was preaching to coal miners in England. He asked one man, “What do you believe?” “Well, I believe the same as the church.” “And what does the church believe?” “Well, they believe the same as me.” Seeing he was getting nowhere, Whitfield said, “And what is it that you both believe?” The man replied, “Well, I suppose the same thing.”
In today’s culture of diverse opinions and agendas, it’s important to examine what it takes to believe right, understanding that it is easy to believe wrong, unless we know what to believe.
Using the Bible as our influence to believe right, let’s take a look at a couple of verses in Proverbs and we’ll consider four essential truths that can help you believe right.
Proverbs 14:15-16 (KJV)
15 The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.
16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.
This passage compares two types of people – the simple or foolish and the prudent or wise. Note that verse 15 tells us that the simple or foolish believes every word he or she hears. Have you ever had someone come to you with a story that they made up and you believed it to be the truth? For example, how do you know that the story that I recalled previously about Jonathan Whitfield is true? While I didn’t make it up, I provided no citation, no certain historical reference, or any other details that validate the story. I simply passed along something I had read. That doesn’t make it any less relevant as an example, but it doesn’t guarantee the truth of the story.
What if you believe something that you hear or read and later find out it was a lie. How would you feel when you found out it was lie? If you are like me, that’s probably happened to you and you probably felt kind of foolish, just as the Bible says. You’ve heard the old saying, “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” That means that it’s up to us to learn what the truth is and know what to believe. Sometimes, that means you must learn from your mistakes, especially the mistake of believing a lie. The Bible tells us that a fool believes every word, while the wise person examines things to find the truth and fears falling.
With that in mind, we are going to examine four essential Truths that are right to believe.
1. Believe in God.
Believing right starts by believing in God – the one true and living God. This is the first essential truth.
Generally, for someone who calls themselves “Christian,” this goes without saying. If I were to ask a group of proclaimed Christians in America who among them believes in God, I almost certainly would get a 100% positive response. After all, we live in America right? One nation under God, our money states, “In God We Trust,” and we call upon God to Bless America. But wait, what or who is the God you believe in? Do you believe in the God of the Bible or do you believe in a god of convenience, compromise and conformity to the world’s beliefs?
Consider these facts:
While an estimated 74 percent of Americans strongly agree that “there is only one true God, who is holy and perfect, and who created the world and rules it today,” an estimated 65 percent either strongly agree or somewhat agree with the assertion that “there is no such thing as absolute truth.”
Christianity Today, September 16, 1991, p. 48, from George Barna, The Barna Report: What Americans Believe, 1991.
If you were to believe the Truth, you would know that there is one God, one Creator of the Universe, one who will sit in Judgment over all things – there is no other.
Isaiah 43:10-11 (KJV)
10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.
You might say,” I do believe in the one true God – the God of the Bible.” That’s great. That’s the first step in believing right!
James 2:19 (KJV)
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
Note that according to the Bible. It’s not enough to just believe in the one true God; there is more to faith than that. Realize this, there are plenty of folks who believe in God, but they are grouped with devils… How can that be?
Here’s a tale that might just be more truth than fiction:
Once the Devil was walking along with one of his companions. They saw a man ahead of them pick up something shiny. “What did he find?” asked the companion.
“A piece of the truth,” the Devil replied.
“Doesn’t it bother you that he found a piece of the truth?” asked the companion.
“No,” said the Devil, “I will see to it that he makes a religion out of it.”
Look at what Jesus said concerning this:
Matthew 7:21-23 (KJV)
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Can the Bible be right? Can the Bible be believed? Is it possible to believe in the wrong “god?” To get the answer, you must believe in the truth of God’s Word.
2. Believe in God’s Word
The second essential truth that you need in order to believe right is believing in God’s Word. OK, so you believe in God – only one true God – the God of the Bible. That’s the first step to believing right. Next, you need to understand what God wants you to do and what God has planned for you. You do this by believing in the Bible – God’s Holy Word.
Do you know that the Bible is God’s personal letter to you? He wrote it, using folks who were committed to him as instruments for recording His words.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
That means that God inspired every word of the Bible and that he intended for you to use it for your benefit.
Psalm 119:65-66 (KJV)
65 Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O LORD, according unto thy word.
66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.
Note that the Bible shows you that God has dealt well with His servant (that means you), as promised in the Bible. In fact:
- You should know that the Bible is filled with promises for those who serve the Lord.
- God has all sorts of great things in store for you if you believe right.
- The Bible will teach you good judgment and knowledge (how to believe right) if you believe in it.
Here’s some reasons why you can believe in the Bible:
- It is indisputable, without error (Psalms 119:89 – For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.)
- It is pure (Psalms 119:140 – Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it.)
- It is the truth, it will last forever – (Psalms 119:160 – Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.)
There are many more reasons to believe in God’s Word…but, most of all, it will help you believe right.
So to believe right: 1) Believe in God, 2) Believe in the Bible, and 3) Believe on God’s Son
3. Believe on God’s Son
The third essential truth that you need to believe right is believing on God’s Son. What does it mean to believe on God’s Son? It means:
- Believing in Jesus Christ,
- Believing in what He did for you on the cross when He died for you, and
- Putting all of your trust in His ability to save you.
Do you know that God loves you? Remember, He is the one true God, and He created you and me. He has great love for you.
In fact, God loves you so much that He wants to spend eternity with you and has taken great steps to make that possible.
In fact, God gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to make that possible. What that means is that Jesus Christ died to pay a price for you and me.
John 3:16-17 (KJV)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
You see, God is holy – that means perfect and without sin. And God cannot be around anything that is not holy or without sin.
The truth about you and me is that we are far from perfect and we all have sinned. In fact, the Bible tells us that we are all sinners…
Romans 3:23 (KJV)
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
The Bible also tells us that there is a payment or a wage for that sin that we owe as a personal debt. But that debt is greater than any payment that you or I could make. As a result, God provided a gift that redeems that debt when the gift is received by faith.
Romans 6:23 (KJV)
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The gift described in Romans 6:23 is received through faith – by believing on Jesus Christ, God’s one and only Son. This is shown clearly in Acts 16:
Acts 16:30-31 (KJV)
30 …Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…
So, the third and most important part of believing right, is to believe on God’s Son, Jesus Christ. There are lots of messages that are contrary to this belief. That’s why you have to know that you believe in the one truth that matters most – that Jesus Christ is the one and only way to eternal life and that trusting in Him will set you free. Have you done that? Believing in God is a first step, followed by believing in God’s Word. But, until you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and on Him alone for your salvation, you are still subject to the penalty of sin and only half-right, which is still wrong and still perilous.
God doesn’t want you to live in peril. He wants you to believe the truth and be free. Remember John 3:16… He loves you so much that He would give His only begotten Son to save you. If you have not trusted Christ as your Savior, there is no better time than now to do so. Don’t risk an eternity apart from God when an eternity with God is only a prayer and a decision away.
Finally, if you believe those first three essential truths, the last essential truth to believing right is to believe in God’s Plan for You.
4. Believe in God’s Plan for You
Do you realize that God has a plan specifically for you? He has something uniquely different in store for you. You need to find that plan, believe in that plan, and follow His Will for your life, whatever that may be.
Believing in that plan involves:
- Surrender – giving up your will to follow His will.
- Sacrifice – forsaking the world’s pleasures for the joy of the Lord or even changing some friendships because they are holding you back.
- Separation – living counter to the world’s culture and being transformed to be more like God’s Son.
Romans 12:1-2 (KJV)
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
When you believe right, you will be willing to do, go, and give to accomplish what God wants in your life. Then you can experience a perfect joy and peace that’s only found by being in the center of His will.
Ask yourself…
- Are you believing in God’s plan for your life?
- Do you know what that plan is?
- Have you surrendered to His will over your own?
The first step is believing in Him as the one true God, believing in His Word and allowing it to bring you Truth, and to know Him by believing on Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son.
So do you know Him? Are you believing right?
Know what you believe and choose to believe right! So much depends on it!
“When you believe right, you will be willing to do, go, and give to accomplish what God wants in your life.” Excellent thought, very well stated.
