Beware of Scoffers

Beware of Scoffers

Read: 2 Peter 3:1-4

2 Peter 3:1-4 (KJV)
1  This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
2  That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
3  Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4  And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

KEY THOUGHT:

There will always be those who doubt the sincerity of the truth – those who hold the truth in contempt and make a case against it. Those types of people are like the “scoffers” referred to by the apostle Peter. Scoffers have been around since Jesus walked the earth and those around today have loud voices and large followings. They’re not afraid to hold what you believe as a Christian in contempt and make it a reason to come against you. In Peter’s day, some of the scoffers were in the church and were guided more by the flesh than by the Holy Spirit. This led them to misunderstanding the truth and ultimately to deny it. Don’t be surprised when you encounter scoffers. Even better, don’t allow your flesh to lead you away from the truth and into the way of scoffers. Delight in the truth and meditate on it (Psalm 1:2)!

CONSIDER:

  1. What are some examples of scoffers that are found today in the world and in the church?
  2. Why does knowing God’s Word help keep you from the way of scoffers?
  3. What does it mean to have contempt for someone else’s beliefs?

APPLICATION:

Beware of those who scoff at the truth of God’s Word!
