Confession, Freedom and Forgiveness

Confession, Freedom and Forgiveness

READ: 1 John 1:8-10

1 John 1:8-10 (KJV)
8  If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10  If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

KEY THOUGHT:

We all sin. We all fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Because of that, we all owe a debt for our sin (Romans 6;23). That debt has a steep price that none of us can pay… But God, because of His great love for us, provided that payment through the gift of His Son Jesus Christ. You have a personal choice to receive that gift or refuse it. When you receive that gift, it brings salvation: freedom from sin’s price, forgiveness, and everlasting life.

Even so, it’s important to realize that the salvation you obtain through Jesus Christ saves you from your sin, but it doesn’t stop you from committing sin. Even after salvation, you might sin. That sin brings guilt and harms your relationship with God through Jesus Christ. However, even though it might make you feel miserable and cause you to regret your sinful activity, your salvation is still secure. Also, God has provided a way for you to get things right. The way to get it right is through confession – telling God what you did and how bad you feel about it. When you confess your sin to God, He is faithful to forgive you and restore you, reminding you of your freedom and forgiveness that comes through Jesus Christ.

CONSIDER:

  1. Why is it a lie to say that you have no sin in you?
  2. What is the basis for your salvation? Why is your salvation secure even if you sin after you’ve trusted in Christ as Savior?
  3. Why is confessing your sin to God on a regular basis so important?
  4. Who can forgive your sins and restore your fellowship with God?

APPLICATION:

Make confession to God and God alone your path to freedom, forgiveness and restored fellowship.
