READ: Philippians 3:1-3
1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.
2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.
3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
KEY THOUGHT:
In today’s culture, there’s plenty of emphasis on happiness. A common message communicated these days is, “If it makes you happy, go for it!” Unfortunately, that advice rarely results in anything more than a state of temporary pleasure that traps you in a relentless pursuit for more. You will never be content seeking after happiness because it is fleeting – you can experience happiness for a moment and then the feeling is gone. There is something better and longer lasting than happiness – that something is joy! Unlike happiness, joy is everlasting and it brings genuine contentment. The apostle Paul recognizes this and rather than being bound by a pursuit for happiness, he is driven by the lasting joy that comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ. Happiness is found in fleeting fleshly indulgence. Genuine joy is found only in Jesus Christ. Are you driven by joy or are you held captive by a pursuit for temporary happiness?
CONSIDER:
- What are some things that make you feel happy?
- Have you ever grown tired of something that once made you feel happy? What was it and why did it no longer “make you happy?”
- Why is it important to be driven by joy instead of happiness?
- What brings you joy?
APPLICATION:
Be driven by the joy of knowing Jesus Christ!
