Driven to Profit by Losing

READ: Philippians 3:4-8

Philippians 3:4-8 (KJV)
4  Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh, I more:
5  Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee;
6  Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
7  But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
8  Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,

KEY THOUGHT:

There is little doubt that we live in a culture that is focused on profit. The daily economy is filled with news of corporate earnings, wealth building programs, and get rich quick schemes. But what is profit and why is it important? Profit is generally considered to be gain of something tangible. To a Christian, profit shouldn’t mean gaining money or things. To a Christian, profit is gaining a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. Consider what Jesus spoke about in Mark 8:38: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Earlier, He told His disciples that they must lose their life to save it. To the Christian, this means that you must change your focus from selfish gain to a focus on the heavenly gain that comes through Jesus Christ. It means that you give your life to Him and allow Him to drive your desires to match His desires for your life. Are you driven to profit by losing your life to Christ?

CONSIDER:

  1. Why is it easier to focus on gaining money and things than on gaining a richer relationship with Jesus?
  2. What are some ways that you can profit by giving your life to Jesus Christ?
  3. How have you invested your life in Jesus?

APPLICATION:

Get the most profit by living your life for Christ and not for self.
