READ: 2 John 1-3
1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
2 For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
KEY THOUGHT:
How do you measure what you do? What is the motivation for your actions? There is a phrase used by the apostle John in this letter that provides a good measure and a reliable motivation for a Christian’s actions: the Truth. There are many metrics that a person could use to measure their actions. For a Christian, an important metric is Truth. How much Truth is contained in what you do? Do your activities, causes and social circles exemplify the Truth? Does what you do advance the Truth or hinder it? As for motivation, if Truth is the motivator, then it’s likely that selfishness won’t be the driver for your actions. When you act for Truth’s sake, your actions will be charitable portions of love, seasoned with grace, mercy and peace.
CONSIDER:
- How can you use Truth as a measure of what you do?
- What are some differences between self-motivated living and Truth-motivated living?
- If you live for Truth’s sake, how can that impact your friends and family?
APPLICATION:
Let your life be lived for Truth’s sake!
