READ: 2 Timothy 3:10-13
10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,
11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
KEY THOUGHT:
Persecution can be defined as hostility, bad treatment, and harassment. Persecution of Christians occurs in several ways, including both lawful and unlawful treatment. The apostle Paul experienced hostility, violence and imprisonment. He warned Timothy that Christians should expect such treatment as they follow Jesus and demonstrate their testimony through godly living. Not only should persecution be expected, Christians should also expect persecution to get “worse and worse” as the world is given over more to Satan. You can use the example of Paul as you live in a world that opposes Christ by focusing on your own faith, lifestyle, purpose, perseverance, love, and patience while looking to Christ for strength and encouragement.
CONSIDER:
- How does your faith in what the Bible teaches help you stand against persecution?
- Why is patience important when facing opposition from the world?
- What are some of the ways you experience persecution? How do you stay encouraged in the face of such persecution?
APPLICATION:
Endure persecution and opposition as a faithful follower of Christ.
