READ: 2 Timothy 4:3-5
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
5 But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.
KEY THOUGHT:
Although the general population may not desire preaching, it’s still a necessary thing. Storytelling, social talks, and motivational messages are prevalent today. But none of those proves ministry. The advent of a social gospel that mimics the traits of true religion but lacks the authenticity of the gospel leads to good feelings but misses the cause of salvation. The proof of ministry is in the work of an evangelist, one who declares the gospel – the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ – for the salving of souls through preaching.
It’s important to watch for proof that ministry is fulfilling the gospel purpose. Genuine ministry is signified by changed lives, beginning with salvation, followed by personal growth, building up the church, and meeting the needs of its members. If those signs aren’t present, the ministry lacks authenticity. Always look for proof that Christ and His gospel are preached.
CONSIDER:
- How does the gospel make ministry authentic?
- What can you do to help ensure your church stays true to the gospel?
- Why is preaching the gospel of salvation a necessary part of true religion (see )?
APPLICATION:
Watch and ensure that you are part of a proven ministry that preaches the gospel of Jesus Christ!
