Purposeful Preaching (2 Timothy 4:1-2)

Purposeful Preaching (2 Timothy 4:1-2)

READ: 2 Timothy 4:1-2

2 Timothy 4:1-2 (KJV)
1  I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;
2  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

KEY THOUGHT:

One of the most curious and regrettable movements in the church today is its drift away from preaching the Word of God. It’s curious because the church can’t accomplish its purpose apart from the Word of God. The Word is a necessary element of faith and salvation (Romans 10:17) that must be heard. It’s regrettable because preaching is the act of communicating the Word of God, which is the one source of the true testimony of Christ – His appearance, His deity, His works, His judgment, His gospel, and His royalty in His kingdom.

A growing number of churches have moved away from preaching the Word of God and are now embracing talks and teaching on “practical” social issues in its place. This movement is in direct opposition of the charge God issues through the apostle Paul. Preaching is a necessary requirement that should occur regularly (in season and out of season, when it’s easy and when it’s difficult). Preaching leads to Christian growth. Eliminating or de-emphasizing preaching stunts the spiritual growth of the church. Also, preaching leads to conviction. Conviction stimulates change. Change is an essential part of growing in Christ.

To summarize the great question of Romans 10, how can the awesome supernatural change that salvation brings occur without hearing and how can hearing occur without preaching?

CONSIDER:

  1. How has preaching impacted your life?
  2. What are some memorable messages that you’ve heard preached in church? What makes the preaching memorable?
  3. How can you help others hear the Word of God preached?

APPLICATION:

Desire preaching so that you can grow in Christ!
