READ: 1 Timothy 4:1-5
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:
5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
KEY THOUGHT:
Staying true to doctrine means that you accept the teaching of the truth of God’s Word the way it is. It also means that the Word is not polluted by man’s ideas of cultural compromise. Even when the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy this was a major issue. The fight against compromised doctrine is an ongoing battle. Whether it’s watered down or an outright purposeful distortion, a compromised doctrine is a lie. That’s why it’s so important to know the truth. By knowing the truth, you can recognize half-truths and lies and depart from them.
Notice in today’s passage how far from the truth some had strayed even in Paul’s day! With so many variations of doctrine available today from numerous sources, it’s important to be wary of what you hear. Word by word, phrase by phrase, and sentence by sentence… know the truth of God’s Word and stay true to it!
CONSIDER:
- Why is knowing the truth of God’s Word important?
- How does hiding God’s Word in your heart help you identify false doctrines?
- What should you do when you suspect that something being taught isn’t aligned with God’s Word?
APPLICATION:
Know God’s Word and let it be your standard for truth!
