READ: 1 Timothy 3:14-16
14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
KEY THOUGHT:
Staying true to godliness means that you strive to represent God with integrity and without blame, regardless of circumstances or situations. Today, in a spirit of inclusion and acceptance, we find the church in a world of compromise. Rather than exercising true discipleship with mercy and grace, we offer excuses for misbehavior and allow these behaviors to transform into new standards.
At a time when the church needs to be more like Jesus Christ than ever before, we find that it is getting comfortable being more like the world. In such, godliness is no longer the goal. This has weakened the church to the point where it no longer is seen as “the pillar and ground of the truth.” Getting back to godliness requires a return to the unconditional truths of the church, without any compromise or controversy: that “God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”
CONSIDER:
- How can you consistently demonstrate godliness?
- Is it possible to have a form of godliness that isn’t genuine? Why or why not?
- How does godliness strengthen the church?
APPLICATION:
Be an example of genuine godliness in service to Christ.
