10 Things Teens Take for Granted…

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

During a Sunday school discussion, I asked a group of teens to list things that they tend to take for granted.  This was intended to be an ice breaker to lead into the meat of the lesson.  There was so much participation, this became a lesson in itself.  Out of the class of 20+ teens, there were about a dozen or so items that were listed.  Some were similar to others, but here is the list we came up with that Sunday morning…

  • Air/Water
  • Food (in the cupboard or in the refrigerator)
  • Having a place to live
  • Family (especially Parents)
  • Friends
  • Being raised in a Christian home
  • The Bible
  • Church
  • Salvation
  • God

It’s an amazing list and it does get one thinking about how much God provides, and how often we neglect to be thankful.  I had one more item on my list – prayer.  Maybe that belongs on a list of things we all neglect… a list for another time, I guess.

Good list. You have “God” and “salvation” on the list already, but when I talk to young people, I find that they specifically take for granted God’s grace and love. They tend to think that He is not all that concerned about their sin. They just assume He’s basically there to help them out if they get in big trouble, and they do not realize that, unless they are in Christ, they are in the path of His wrath, because He is holy, righteous, and hates sin.
