The Call to Holiness (1 Thessalonians 4:1-8)

The Call to Holiness (1 Thessalonians 4:1-8)

READ: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8

1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 (KJV)
1  Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
2  For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.
3  For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
4  That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
5  Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
6  That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
7  For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
8  He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

KEY THOUGHT:

You were created for a specific purpose for God’s pleasure. Your thoughts and actions are all part of your purpose to please God. With that in mind, do they please God? The instruction that God provides in His Word, along with the Holy Spirit’s guidance in your life, enable you to please God as an individual and as part of the church. One of the key ways that you please God is through holiness, which is an ongoing process of learning and growing in Jesus Christ. To please God, you must know Him. That requires learning and understanding His will. It also requires sanctification – the act of purifying your life through obedience to God’s Word and submission to the Holy Spirit.

Sanctification is an ongoing process that leads to holiness. It requires dedication and diligence. You should have a daily goal to grow in grace through sanctification. That means that you strive to make good choices – choices that please God – on a daily basis. It also means that you lean more and more on God’s wisdom and His Word than on your own understanding and desires. Ultimately, you as an individual, and the church as a whole, are called to holiness. It’s a call we all need to answer.

CONSIDER:

  1. What is your purpose in the church and how does it please God?
  2. How do your choices impact God’s pleasure and your relationship to Him?
  3. How does your sanctification affect the holiness of the church?

APPLICATION:

Grow in the likeness of Christ and His holiness.
