The Call to Live in the Light (1 Thessalonians 5:5-8)

READ: 1 Thessalonians 5:5-8

1 Thessalonians 5:5-8 (KJV)
5  Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6  Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
7  For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
8  But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

KEY THOUGHT:

There’s no doubt that darkness is abundant in the world. Even so, God has given you a special place as a child of light – adopted into His family to shine the light of the gospel of peace to those in darkness. As a child of light, you have a responsibility to live in obedience to God and to live expectantly as the day of Christ’s return approaches. The apostle Paul calls believers to live alertly and watchfully with faith, love and hope. That means you must stay awake and not be caught off guard by what God brings your way – even the return of Christ the Lord!

CONSIDER:

  1. What does it mean for you to live as a child of light?
  2. Why is it important for you to stay alert and watchful as the world gets darker?
  3. If Christ were to return today, would you be found looking forward to His return or preoccupied with the world?

APPLICATION:

Be watchful and alert as a child of light.
