READ: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3
1 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
KEY THOUGHT:
Storm preparedness is important when your on an island. When a warning is given, it’s best to take heed and get things in order. You never want to be caught by surprise when the wind and waves hit. In much the same way, you must be prepared for the coming of Jesus Christ, understanding that there is danger for those who are not ready.
Immediately after comforting the Thessalonians with assurance of Christ’s certain return, the apostle Paul gives a warning so that they will be prepared and so that they will be diligent about helping others prepare. He stresses that the timing is unknown, but Christ’s return will happen without notice, “as a thief in the night” comes without warning.
Paul notes that many will be unprepared, finding their comfort and security in the temporary satisfaction of this world. Those who disregard the gospel message and put off accepting God’s gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ will experience sudden destruction with no way of escape. Of course there is hope now. That hope is in being prepared by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior by faith and living expectantly for His return.
It also should be noted that many Christians will be surprised by Christ’s return and may be embarrassed by their surprise. That’s why it’s important for you to live with great expectation of Christ’s return, diligently seeking to fulfill God’s will as He works through you. Ready or not, Christ is coming!
