The Gladness of Thanksgiving (Psalm 68:3)

The Gladness of Thanksgiving (Psalm 68:3)

READ: Psalm 68:3

Psalm 68:3 (KJV)
3  But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.

KEY THOUGHT:

The original intent of a designated Thanksgiving holiday was to set aside a day for offering thanksgiving to God centered on gladness and rejoicing in the provisions from God. However, today many of us (Christians) experience a day filled with frustration and anxiety over getting to Black Friday sales, anguish over the number of retail store openings on Thanksgiving Day, and aggravation over long lines as we wait for those stores to open. Truly, this ought not be so. As Christians, we should set the example for gladness on this day.

Think about it – what are some of the things we can be glad about? Here are a few things to consider:

  • the forgiveness and grace that comes from a loving God;
  • the salvation that comes only through Jesus Christ;
  • the Word of God that we can hold in our hands and read at will; and
  • the presence of the Holy Spirit to help guide us to God’s perfect will.

With those things in mind, instead of making a list of all the items to pursue on this Black Friday, how about taking time to make a list of all that God has done in your life? You can start your list with those things I listed and add to it. I’m certain that before your list gets very long you will have tears of joy and gladness as you recall all of God’s blessings… in fact, your gladness may lead you to exceedingly rejoice in all that God provides.

CONSIDER:

  1. Why is gladness and rejoicing a part of thanksgiving to God?
  2. What are some things that bring your heart gladness as you celebrate Thanksgiving Day?
  3. How can a Christian spread gladness this Thanksgiving Day?

APPLICATION:

Exceedingly rejoice as you give thanks!
