The Heart of Thanksgiving (Colossians 3:14-17)

The Heart of Thanksgiving (Colossians 3:14-17)

READ: Colossians 3:14-17

Colossians 3:14-17 (KJV)
14  And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
15  And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
17  And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

KEY THOUGHT:

Where does true thanksgiving spring from? True thanksgiving is a product of the heart. Having a thankful heart that is filled with love is one way that we can share the blessings of God with others. When our hearts are filled with love and thanks, it is nearly impossible not to have a giving attitude.

Today’s devotional passage from Colossians 3 can be used to paint a picture of thanksgiving from the heart. A heart of thanksgiving begins with a love for God and the things of God. Based on this passage, here are three ways to demonstrate the heart of thanksgiving toward God by offering thanks and love:

  1. for His word, which brings wisdom and understanding of His will;
  2. for all that is accomplished through service to Him, which brings peace with regard to your position; and
  3. for Who He is, which brings even greater love as you understand how He first loved you.

This Thanksgiving holiday season, as you offer up a heart of thanksgiving to those around you, God promises blessings in return. With such a promise, isn’t it appropriate to extend your heart of thanksgiving beyond the holiday by showing forth love throughout the year?

CONSIDER:

  1. What does it mean to show “Christian love?”
  2. What are some ways that you can demonstrate a heart of thanksgiving to your family and friends?
  3. What are some ways that God blesses a person who is faithful at sharing the love of Christ?

APPLICATION:

Make the love of God the heart of your thanksgiving!
