READ: 1 John 3:11-16
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
KEY THOUGHT:
How do you show someone that you love them? You can tell someone that you love them, but if your actions don’t show them, they will find it difficult to believe you. The apostle Paul wrote about demonstrating love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Here are a few things he wrote about love in action: It is patient, kind, humble, selfless, generous, and enduring. Paul could write those things (and more) about love because He had experienced the love of God and that love was in Him.
If you know Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, you’ve experienced the love of God in a personal way and His love is in you. You experience God’s patient love as He waited for you to trust Him. You experienced God’s loving kindness as He extended to you a gift you did not deserve – the gift of His Son Jesus Christ. You experienced God’s humble love as He had His Son leave Heaven and come to earth to show Himself to you. You experienced God’s selfless love as Jesus Christ went to the cross to die for your sins, although He committed no sins of His own. You experienced God’s generous love through His pardon of your sin debt and by making you a temple for His Holy Spirit. You are experiencing God’s enduring love now through His promise to never leave you, forsake you, or be separated from you. You have security in God’s love demonstrated by Him laying down His life for you. Having God’s love in you, you should love others as He loves you.
CONSIDER:
- What are specific ways that God’s love has been manifested to you?
- How should you live differently because of God’s love to you?
- Is it possible to have the love of God and hate others? Why or why not?
- How does the love of God help you to love all people, including loving lost sinners?
APPLICATION:
Use the love of God that is in you to show love to others!
