The Mark of Christmas (Matthew 2:1-11)

The Mark of Christmas (Matthew 2:1-11)

READ: Matthew 2:1-11

Matthew 2:1-11 (KJV)
1  Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2  Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
3  When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4  And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
5  And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
6  And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
7  Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
8  And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
9  When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
10  When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
11  And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

KEY THOUGHT:

There are many aspects of the Scriptural Christmas story that we capture in the sights and sounds of Christmas. One of those that stands out in Scripture and marks the Christmas story is the star of Bethlehem. A lighted star is a prominent part of decorations and this particular star found in Scripture was a much more prominent as it lighted the night sky to guide those seeking Jesus Christ to Him after His birth.

The story of the star is found in today’s Scripture passage from the gospel account according to Matthew. It was a marker God used to guide wise men to Christ. From this passage, here are four ideas about the star that marked Christmas:

  1. God provided a guide to bring the wise men to Jesus… He provides a guide now through the written Word.
  2. Those who followed the star found Jesus… Those who follow the Word today meet the Savior.
  3. Encountering Jesus brings exceeding great joy, whether by star or by the Word!
  4. The star called the wise men to worship the young King Jesus… today the Word calls us to worship the Lamb of God who gave His life to redeem us!

Reflecting on the star and its meaning, we can see that God marks Christmas with an everlasting light that’s found only in His Son, Jesus Christ.

CONSIDER?

  1. What would you say is the most prominent mark of your Christmas?
  2. How does the Bible light the way to Christ?
  3. How can you help shine a light that guides others to Christ?

APPLICATION:

Let Christ be the most prominent light of your Christmas!
