The Meaning of Christmas (Luke 2:8-11)

The Meaning of Christmas (Luke 2:8-11)

READ: Luke 2:8-11

Luke 2:8-11 (KJV)
8  And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

KEY THOUGHT:

Have you ever met someone who didn’t understand the real meaning of Christmas? What would you say to let them know what Christmas is all about? If you are able to communicate the true meaning of Christmas to others, you will deliver good tidings of great joy to them.

Whenever I think of communicating the true meaning of Christmas, my mind goes back to a classic animated short film that, to me at least, communicated the real meaning of Christmas as it struggled with the issues of a secular Christmas holiday. That film is Charles Schulz’s A Charlie Brown Christmas. As a big Peanuts fan, I can relate to Charlie Brown, having experienced my fair (or unfair, depending on one’s point of view) share of mistakes, self-made disappointments, and outright blunders. Plus, I have a beagle that reminds me of Snoopy in more ways than I could ever have imagined. Anyway, the thing I like most about A Charlie Brown Christmas is that it doesn’t shy away from the Truth. While the animated special portrays the popular world view of a secular Christmas, with a lot of fretting about programs, decorations and trees; it also, without apology, conveys the real meaning of Christmas using Scripture in the script. In the end, A Charlie Brown Christmas puts Christ first in Christmas.

The story behind A Charlie Brown Christmas (based on what I read from an article at the Washington Post’s site) is interesting as well, and for yet another Christmas season, it bears repeating…

Charles Schulz insisted on one core purpose: A Charlie Brown Christmas had to be about something life changing. Namely, it had to be about the true meaning of Christmas. Otherwise, Schulz said, “Why bother doing it?” The creative team asked Schulz whether he was sure he wanted to include Biblical text in the special. The cartoonist’s response: “If we don’t do it, who will?” As the story goes, the sponsor, Coca-Cola, never balked at the idea of including New Testament passages. And, neither did the network. As a result, the scene where Linus reads from the Book of Luke about the meaning of Christmas became “the most magical two minutes in all of TV animation,” according to the producer.

The producer’s words are quite appropriate since on that one starry night over two thousand years ago was the most magical night in history, when God came to earth as a baby to dwell among His creation and to die for the same. What a story, what a truth, and what a meaning for Christmas!

So if you’re seeking to know what Christmas is all about, the account is there for you and everyone else to read… so don’t take my word for it… take the Word of God! As Linus from the Peanuts gang says after reading Scripture from Luke chapter 2, “that’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

CONSIDER:

  1. How would you describe the meaning of Christmas to someone who asks, “what’s Christmas all about?”
  2. How does the secular side of the Christmas holiday distract people from the real meaning of Christmas?
  3. What can you do to ensure that your Christmas makes Christ its meaning?

APPLICATION:

Never shy away from letting the world know what Christmas is all about… let them know that it’s all about Jesus!
