READ: Luke 2:13-14
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
KEY THOUGHT:
A prominent part of the Christmas season is song. The melody of Christmas fills shops, malls, and the airwaves. One doesn’t need to go far to hear songs of Christmas being whistled, hummed and sung by others. Christmas musicals, sonatas, symphonies and choral presentations are scheduled throughout the season and new Christmas albums are issued each year with many of the same traditional songs from years gone by being repurposed for a new season of listeners.
Although there’s plenty of music that celebrates the secular view of Christmas, it is the sacred songs of faith based on a Scriptural account of Christ’s birth that carries the truth to a world in need of a Savior. Such a melody was a part of the first advent of Christ – when Christ’s birth was announced to the world in a supernatural way. Angels and heavenly host sang as a King and Savior was born. Peace was celebrated. Joy was spread. God had come to mankind. All of heaven couldn’t help but sing!
There are three distinct characteristics about the song that the heavenly host sang:
- It was a song of praise.
- It was a song that glorified God.
- It was a song that had a specific message for those who heard it.
The birth of Jesus was reason to sing then and it remains a reason to sing today. As we consider carols during this Christmas, let’s sing praises with voices lifted high, “Glory to the newborn King! – Born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth!”
CONSIDER:
- What is your favorite Christmas song? What makes the song special to you?
- Why is song such an important part of worship and praise?
- How can you spread joy to others through a melody this Christmas?
APPLICATION:
Let the melody of Christmas, praise to the Savior Jesus Christ, be in your heart and on your lips this Christmas.
