The Memory of Christmas (John 1:14-16)

The Memory of Christmas (John 1:14-16)

READ: John 1:14-16

John 1:14-16 (KJV)
14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
15  John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
16  And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

KEY THOUGHT:

As Christmas Day passes and Christmas night  gets well underway, there seems to be a lull in the hustle and bustle of the holiday. The madness that permeates our society from pre-Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve fades into the past and there is now time to for me to reflect even more serenely on the wonder, majesty and meaning of Christmas. It is the quiet time of the day when I can pause to remember what this day meant this year and throughout history.

One of those reminders is the bells of Christmas, which are so much a part of the season. We are reminded of it through songs, through movies, and through the Salvation Army collection at many of our Christmas shopping venues. From Carol of the Bells to Silver Bells to I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, and even in the classic holiday film It’s a Wonderful Life, bells are used as a reminder of Christmas. Bells recall the promise of Christmas and the miracle God provided through the Christ child. They also serve as a solemn recall of the meaning of Christmas and the challenges that face the faithful who choose to keep Christ first.

In the quietness of the late Christmas evening, the bells of Christmas ring out loud and clear, God is with us. With the ringing of the bells at Christmas and throughout the year comes an opportunity and a responsibility afforded through grace for each child of God to remember and spread the good news of the gospel by ringing out tidings of peace on earth and goodwill toward men from God.

Merry Christmas! Let the bells ring out “hope” for many future days of peace and joy in knowing the Savior and standing strong in His grace!

CONSIDER:

  1. What do you think of when you hear bells at Christmas?
  2. How are bells used today to draw attention to Jesus?
  3. What can you do to better remember the purpose and meaning of Christmas throughout the year?

APPLICATION:

Allow the memory of Christmas motivate you to serve Christ throughout the year.
