The Merry in Christmas (Luke 2:8-18)

The Merry in Christmas (Luke 2:8-18)

READ: Luke 2:8-18

Luke 2:8-18 (KJV)
8  And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15  And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16  And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17  And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18  And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

KEY THOUGHT:

Music and making merry are important parts of the Christmas season. Christmas caroling, choir singing, and special songs help celebrate Christmas. In fact, when you consider the occasion, music is an especially effective way to celebrate Christmas in a merry way. After all, it’s the birthday of Jesus Christ – the King of Kings! It’s a great time to sing the “happy birthday” song. Christmas is a time for celebration – a time to sing joy, sing praise, sing “Noel”! The word “Noel” is used most often at Christmas, buy how does the meaning of the word convey the birthday celebration of Jesus Christ?

We sing “The First Noel” and “Noel, Noel” without truly comprehending the joyous tidings we sing. The word Noel represents two things in one:

  1. “Happy Birthday” or in this case, “Merry Christmas”, and
  2. “Good News,” as in the arrival of royalty.

So when we sing “Noel,” it should be sung full of joy and exaltation for the One whose birth is commemorated, Jesus Christ!

Think about how it must have been that evening in the fields outside of Bethlehem when the multitude of angels sang joyously of the first Noel. And again, think of how the shepherds made haste to find the newborn King so that they could rejoice with a resounding “Noel”. They were so amazed by this miracle birth that they could not contain themselves… they left the manger letting all those they encountered know of this great Noel! As we think of this upcoming birthday celebration, let’s have the same spirit as the shepherds and desire to invite all to the great celebration, this Noel of Jesus Christ! Just as the angels did sing, let’s keep Christ first this Christmas by proclaiming “Noel!” to the King of Kings, Jesus Christ!

CONSIDER?

  1. What role does music fill in singing “Noel” during your Christmas celebration?
  2. How do the songs you sing at Christmas glorify and praise Jesus?
  3. What can you do to ensure that the merry music of Christmas focuses on keeping Jesus first at Christmas?

APPLICATION:

Sing Noel to Jesus!
