The Message of Christmas (Luke 2:8-18)

The Message of Christmas (Luke 2:8-18)

READ: Luke 2:8-18

Luke 2:8-18 (KJV)
8  And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15  And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16  And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17  And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18  And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

KEY THOUGHT:

It’s difficult to imagine a time when Christmas, that is the remembrance of Christ’s birth, wasn’t celebrated. Likewise, it’s hard to picture a place where Christmas isn’t recognized. However, both of those cases existed in times past and even today. For example, there are at least 30 countries in today’s world that do not recognize Christmas as a holiday. Also, in times past, the celebration of Christmas has been outlawed in places one wouldn’t expect, including the United States original colonies in the late 1600’s and reformed England, also in the 1600’s.

Following the letter of the Word, it’s easy to conclude that the celebration of Christmas as a “holiday” is not Scriptural. While there’s plenty of evidence that supports that view (especially when you consider the Myths and Legends of Christmas in addition to Scripture), it can be successfully argued that the remembrance and recognition of Christ’s birth and the message that His birth brought to the world is Biblically sound. That message is this: a Savior was born to redeem mankind.

To deny that the message of Christ’s birth is Scriptural is to deny Scripture itself. For example Jesus’ birth was prophesied several times in Scripture. Here are three examples:

  1. Christ born of a virgin (Isaiah 7:14)
  2. Christ born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:1-2)
  3. Christ an offspring of Jesse in the lineage of David (Isaiah 11:1-10)

And certainly, today’s referenced Scripture in Luke 2:8-18 mentions Christ’s birth, including the circumstances and settings of His birth, in the gospels. Luke 2 supports the remembrance and recognition of Jesus’ birth, and gives account of the natural and supernatural celebration that occurred.

From this passage and others, we can see that there are five significant justifications for remembering and recognizing the birth of Jesus Christ with the message of Christmas:

  1. His conception was supernatural through the virgin birth
  2. His birth was significant to all who heard the news
  3. His birth was specially announced by a heavenly host
  4. His message was Scripturally foretold by prophets of God
  5. His message was supreme in power through His gospel of peace

Additionally, we find specifically in Luke 2:8-18 that celebrating the message of Christ is accomplished three ways:

  1. Recognizing the significance of Jesus’ birth.
  2. Reveling in the person of Jesus Christ.
  3. Revealing the message of Christ to others.

While we may not be able to light up the sky like the star of wonder that shined so bright on the very first Christmas or sing with the shout of the heavenly host, we still have a responsibility to share the Christmas message with others. Whether you go tell it on the mountain, house-to-house, or in a more intimate way, make the message of Christmas, the gospel of Jesus, a key part of your conversation this season. After all, the message of Christmas is Christ!

CONSIDER:

  1. How is the message of Christmas distorted by media and marketing today?
  2. Why is it important to communicate the true message of Christmas to others?
  3. What can you do to share the message of Christmas with people you encounter?

APPLICATION:

Make the message of Jesus Christ your Christmas message!
