The Motivation of Christmas (John 3:16-21)

The Motivation of Christmas (John 3:16-21)

READ: John 3:16-21

John 3:16-21 (KJV)
16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19  And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21  But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

KEY THOUGHT:

If we only understood the Christmas season by what we observe around us, one might think the motivation for the season is shopping, selfishness, and the acquisition of material things. That’s far from the true motivation for the season. The true motivation for Christmas is clearly shown in today’s Scripture from the gospel according to John.

The prophet Isaiah provides more concerning the motivation for the birth of God’s Son on earth:

Isaiah 9:6-7 (KJV)
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

If you continued to search through Scripture, you would find more of the true motivation for Christmas over and over again. We find it summarized in 1 John 3:1:

1 John 3:1 (KJV)
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

From these passages, we see the true motivation of Christmas. The true motivation of Christmas is love. The love of God is demonstrated through the gift of a Savior, Christ the Lord! As we go about our day-to-day activities this season, keep in mind the motivation that changed the world – the love of God – and carry that love, carry the light and be motivated to love this Christmas and demonstrate that motivation by giving.

From the Scripture passages mentioned today, we see that:

  1. God gave because He loved.
  2. God gave to demonstrate His love.
  3. God gave to redeem those He loved.

What a great gift of love we received from God. This Christmas, let that gift motivate you to make Christ first in all that you do!

CONSIDER?

  1. How was love demonstrated by God toward man?
  2. How does the celebration of Christmas convey God’s love to others?
  3. What can you do to be motivated to share the gift of God’s love with others?

APPLICATION:

Allow God’s love be your motivation for serving others this Christmas!
