The Mystery of Christmas (Matthew 1:18-23)

The Mystery of Christmas (Matthew 1:18-23)

READ: Matthew 1:18-25

Matthew 1:18-25 (KJV)
18  Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19  Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
20  But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22  Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
24  Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
25  And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

KEY THOUGHT:

One of the things that makes Christmas so exciting is its mystery. Wish lists, surprises and secrets prevail during the Christmas season. Clinging to the mystery of Christmas helps keep the Christ of Christmas first throughout the holidays.

Such mystery was a part of the first advent of Christ – the very first Christmas. Israel had a wish list for a Messiah and deliverance from oppression. Mary, a young virgin espoused to a just man, was surprised by a miraculous conception. And secretly, Joseph and Mary both carried out a divine plan to deliver the greatest Christmas gift of all to a world desperately in need of salvation.

Wishes, surprises and secrets make Christmas a mystery. But hope makes it marvelous! Imagine if Mary could have known that the child she was blessed to carry and to deliver would be the hope of all mankind! Hope becomes reality through the revelation of Emmanuel, God with us… and God is experienced in a personal way through the gospel of Jesus Christ!

CONSIDER:

  1. What does the mystery of Christmas mean to you?
  2. What is the greatest surprise you’ve ever had at Christmas? What made it so great?
  3. How has the mystery of the gospel been revealed to you?

APPLICATION:

Share in the mystery of Christmas by trusting in Jesus Christ, the virgin-born Savior of the world!
