The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving (Psalm 116:16-19)

The Sacrifice of Thanksgiving (Psalm 116:16-19)

READ: Psalm 116:16-19

Psalm 116:16-19 (KJV)
16  O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.
17  I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.
18  I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people,
19  In the courts of the LORD’S house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.

KEY THOUGHT:

Can thanksgiving be a sacrifice? When we think of thanksgiving, our minds turn almost immediately to Thanksgiving Day. For many of us, it is a day to celebrate bountiful blessings with feast, family, and fun (for me and many others, that’s usually spelled “football, turkey and pumpkin pie”). But that’s not the case for everyone on Thanksgiving Day. There are many who will struggle to find a meal of any sort on Thanksgiving Day, let alone on other days of the year. As a result, many ministries and mission-minded individuals give priority to sacrificial giving as part of their thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving Day, or sometime during Thanksgiving week, they prepare and give food, find ways to meet needs, and offer benevolence to those in need to demonstrate the love of Jesus to others.

As Christ’s love is shed through acts of kindness and generosity, it is important not to neglect mankind’s greatest need. It isn’t food, or water, or even a cure for disease… it is a cure for sin, which is provided only through the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ. His perfect sacrifice became our eternal thanksgiving. We need to share that message with those who need to hear it. As you prepare for Thanksgiving Day – with feast, family, and fun – could you stand to neglect offering a sacrifice of thanksgiving to a world filled with need? Would you help them understand the remedy they receive by calling upon the name of the Lord for salvation? There is no better way to demonstrate your thanksgiving to God than to share His Words of Life with someone who needs them.

CONSIDER:

  1. Which is more important – meeting physical needs or meeting spiritual needs at Thanksgiving? Why?
  2. Why is it important for people to know that they can call upon the name of the Lord in times of need?
  3. What will you do to offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving this year?

APPLICATION:

Make plans to show Christ this Thanksgiving holiday by offering a sacrifice of thanksgiving!
