READ: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-6
1 For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:
2 But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.
3 For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:
4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
5 For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:
6 Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.
KEY THOUGHT:
How you spread the gospel makes a difference. The difference is found in the truth that’s contained in the message. It’s easy to think that a watered down message that appeals to fleshly desires rather than to spiritual needs will work in today’s culture. But a watered down, twisted or deceitful message will never have the power of the pure Word of God. Paul’s message to the Thessalonians shows that being trusted with the gospel message means that you speak not to please men, but to please God; and not with flattering words or to gain glory or possession, but to be a true witness of Jesus Christ. Only with His truth will a genuine difference be made through your message. Is your message the whole truth or only part of the story?

- Why do you think that many churches and their members tell stories rather than focusing on the truth of the gospel?
- How can you be certain that your message about Jesus is the truth?
- How does watering down the gospel message hurt the example of the church?
