READ: 2 John 4-6
4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
KEY THOUGHT:
“What is love and will I ever find it?” I suppose that this is a question many of us have asked at some point in our youth as we search for the perfect answer that satisfies our longing for love. The apostle John provides an answer here: Love is walking (living, demonstrating, acting) in a way that satisfies God’s Truth. When you walk in Truth, you exemplify Jesus Christ. You show His love to others. You demonstrate your perfection (completeness) to those you encounter. The Truth is found in the new commandment given by Christ in John’s gospel (John 13:34-35), “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” Love is Truth. Truth is loving others like Christ loves you.
CONSIDER:
- What are some ways that you can demonstrate God’s Truth through your love?
- How does deception hinder love?
- Describe how Jesus loves you? In what ways does your love for others imitate Jesus’ love for you?
APPLICATION:
Make the love of Christ the model for your love of others.
