Washington Phillips (1880–1954) – I Am Born to Preach the Gospel

From deep in the Audio Vault comes this masterpiece by the notable Washington Phillips, a gospel singer who sang and played solo with a zither-based manzarene, his own unique instrument. The song is re-recorded from a circa 1927 Columbia Records 78 rpm.  It is also available on at least a couple of collections that are available today. The original record is extremely difficult, if not practically impossible to find, with only a handful known to exist. A few years back, I came across a version that had been transferred to audio tape, which is what’s represented here.

While not Mr. Phillips’ most popular song (“Denomination Blues” probably tops the list of his most popular tunes), this is my personal favorite, as I can relate to its title and message, “…and I sure do love my job.”

While there is no copyright noted, the ownership of the lyrics and music belong to Washington Phillips, his legacy and heirs.
